Summarly: AI email tools, before ChatGPT
Browser extensions that brought natural language processing into Gmail, Apple Mail and Outlook, years before large language models.
What was needed
Email had become where professionals delegate work, archive documents and schedule their week. Summarly set out to make it take less of their day, with AI agents built into the apps they already used.
What we did
Email summaries
Long threads summarised automatically, with the key sentences highlighted and labels suggested.
Reading time
How long each email takes to read, so people could plan their inbox around the time they had.
Readability scores
A measure of how hard an email is to read, based on the Flesch-Kincaid tests.
Shorter emails
A writing aid that kept emails brief for people reading on phones and watches.
The outcome
Summarly won the EIT Digital Venture Program in 2019. The idea behind it, agents working inside the tools people already use, is how we build AI agents today.
